Northern California’s own Rita Hosking sings of forest fires, culture clash, demolition derbies, the working class and hope. Rita’s style of country-folk has been lauded for story and sense of place, and her performances praised for capturing the audience. Honors include winner of the '08 Dave Carter Memorial Songwriting Contest at the Sisters Folk Festival, finalist in the '09 Telluride Troubadour Contest, and more. "This California girl comes by her mountain-music sensibility with true authenticity, with original songs deeply rooted in her family's frontier experience." A descendant of Cornish miners who sang in the mines, Rita grew up with deep regard for folk music and the power of the voice.
Rita's brand new release, Frankie and the No-Go Road, is a thematic album following 12 steps of a hero's journey. Already the album has made the Top Country Albums of 2015, with five stars from the Telegraph, and the UK's Observer/Guardian calls it "one of Americana's finest concept albums.
Rita began recording and publishing in 2005 with Are You Ready?, and followed in 2007 with Silver Stream. Come Sunrise, Rita's 2009 record, won Best Country Album Vox Pop in the 2010 Independent Music Awards. Burn, from 2011, was placed in the top 10 "Young Female Artist releases for 2011" by No Depression magazine, and listed as a "Hidden Gem of 2011" by the UK's Observer.
For this performance, Rita will play as the Rita Hosking Trio with Rita on guitar and harmonica, joined by her husband Sean Feder on Dobro and banjo and Bill Dakin on upright bass.
Special guest Mark Lemaire is known for his unique guitar style that incorporates masterful fingerpicking, slap-and-tap harmonics and percussion. Mark's solo guitar pieces stand on their own, while his harmonies with Cindy Lemaire are so perfectly matched that they seem like two people with one voice. The songs run from tongue-in-cheek songs about married life to stories of the strange surprise of middle age creeping up on us. The music ranges from powerful solo guitar to raucous sing-alongs. Folks leave at the end both smiling and fulfilled. Mark’s music is informed by his years as a recording engineer and producer for everyone from the San Francisco Symphony to Rolling Stones’ producer Jimmy Miller.
As ususal, there will be a break with delicious snacks and a chance to catch up with fellow fans, friends and neighbors. Come as you are. The event is completely non-releigious - its all about the music here!
